Gaining Influence in the Workplace

You need to develop competence and trustworthiness in order to have influence in the workplace. If you are to be influential, then people should see that you are reliable and they feel confident working by your side.

You need to avoid these two attitudes if you are to achieve your goal of being influential in the workplace. First is that you act out too aggressively, and second, and on the other end of the spectrum, if you don’t speak up and never do anything for your co-workers. With these two extremes people will never, ever see your true value.

You then need to find the middle ground. Confidence, connection, and consistency are the most important things to achieve influence in the workplace. Thus, with these traits, you will earn the ability to be influential in the workplace.

The tips below will show you how to cultivate influence in the workplace which can help advance your career.

Body language is very important. People watch our body language all the time. Here is what you should do with your body – put your shoulders back, your head and chin up , and your hands to your side. This shows how confident you are and at the same time that you can be a friend to anyone. This posture will also help you feel more confident about yourself.

Nice people have a hard time saying no. But, it is important that we learn to prioritize our yesses and our nos appropriately. You say yes if it is for the more important goals. Saying yes is good if you have plenty of time in your hands. However, there are times when we say yes to everyone and get behind on very important projects. Always saying yes to people will derail your goals. Prioritize your goals so you will know when to say yes and when to say no to people.

Listening to others is a sure way of getting the trust of people. Listen without distraction. Or, you can gain trust by building up your coworkers.
